Vietnamese Zodiac – Cultural Art Print by Bao Quyen
This artwork is an original illustration by Bao Quyen, printed on high-quality textured paper for a refined, tactile finish that enhances detail and colour depth.
In Vietnam, the traditional zodiac system follows a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by an animal sign. The Vietnamese zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox (Water Buffalo), Tiger, Cat (or Rabbit), Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
While the Vietnamese zodiac is closely related to the Chinese zodiac, it has several unique cultural differences. One of the most notable is the presence of the Cat instead of the Rabbit. A popular theory suggests that this change occurred due to language interpretation—the Chinese word for rabbit, “mao” (卯), sounds similar to the Vietnamese word “mèo”, meaning cat. Over time, the cat became the accepted zodiac symbol in Vietnamese tradition.
Another key distinction is the importance of the Water Buffalo, which often replaces or represents the Ox in Vietnam. As a vital animal in Vietnamese agriculture and rural life, the Water Buffalo symbolizes strength, diligence, and resilience—values deeply rooted in the culture.
This illustration celebrates the Vietnamese interpretation of the zodiac, honoring tradition, language, and cultural identity through contemporary visual storytelling.
Perfect as cultural wall art, an educational piece, or a meaningful gift for lovers of Vietnamese heritage and Asian astrology.
