Lễ Vu Lan (Wandering Souls Festival) Bookmark
The Lễ Vu Lan (Wandering Souls Festival) Bookmark is inspired by one of the most meaningful Vietnamese spiritual traditions—a time of remembrance, gratitude, and compassion for ancestors and wandering souls.
The illustration depicts a Vietnamese woman wearing a white áo dài, traditionally worn by women during Lễ Vu Lan as a symbol of purity, respect, and reflection. During the festival, women also wear a rose on their chest—a red rose if their mother is still alive, and a white rose if she has passed away. This quiet yet powerful symbol is central to Vu Lan, expressing love, gratitude, and remembrance.
Another important element reflected in the illustration is the tradition of floating lotus lanterns on water, a ritual believed to guide wandering souls, offer light, and carry prayers of peace and compassion. Lễ Vu Lan always takes place during the full moon of the 7th lunar month (usually falling in August), a time associated with spiritual openness, reflection, and connection between worlds.
This bookmark captures the emotional depth of Lễ Vu Lan—honoring the past, acknowledging unseen presences, and celebrating love that continues beyond form. Designed as both a functional object and a small ritual, it turns everyday reading into a moment of mindfulness and remembrance.
